Kiln-formed Glass Artist.

Profile

I am a kiln-formed glass artist. My glass work reflects my love of colours and patterns. I create wearable, functional and decorative glass.

At the Annual Scottish Glass Society (SGS) Exhibition 2023, I created ‘mould juice’ glass bowls: ‘Mould juice’ celebrates the Scottish physician- scientist, Alexander Fleming, who discovered the green mould he was working with produced a substance that could kill many common bacteria that infect humans. He called this new, exciting substance ‘mould juice’. He later named it penicillin. I used combinations of silver and reactive glasses to create halos which mimicked the appearance of mould. Unlike the ‘real’ mould, these variegated halos added colours, patterns and depth to my handmade, unique and dynamic bowls. These bowls were very well received and I was thrilled when my work was mentioned in the Art Mag. I further applied creative slumping and made two ‘Mould Juice” drop-out vases. They were exhibited at the Annual SGS Exhibition 2024; they were sold at pre-view.

In September 2024, I won the SGS Hamilton Taylor Award. I used the award money to part-fund a day glass class (April 2025) with my chosen kiln formed glass artist, Amanda Simmons, at Castle Douglas. It was an inspiring class during which my existing glass techniques, especially cold work, were reviewed and I have also explored the use of glass powder to develop a new body of work, focusing on the creation of lightweight powder vessels, based on my love for colours and patterns.

To create a piece of authentic glass art requires vivid imagination, an aesthetic pair of eyes, resourceful thinking, technical execution, finesse and the desire to connect with your audience. I simply wish I had all the time in the world to make glass.

I work as a Consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon as my day job.
