Artist in Residence: Cathryn Shilling

We are delighted to announce our first Artist in Residence in our 2018/19 programme as internationally renowned glass artist, Cathryn Shilling.

This two-part residency begins this month with an initial investigation phase allowing time and freedom to explore new creative threads. Returning later in the year, Cathryn hopes to use this time to create work based on the knowledge gained during the previous months. The work will be inspired by her relationship to time and place; the exact nature of the work is yet to be revealed.

On receiving the exciting news, Cathryn comments: “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for me as an artist, to be able to move my practice out of familiar surroundings to a place so full of new sources of inspiration. The time spent on this residency is going to be so valuable to me and I’m sure it will resonate through my work for years to come.”

North Lands Creative Programme Executive, Joanna Garrett comments: “We are delighted to be welcoming Cathryn back to North Lands on a residency which will allow her the creative freedom so regularly denied by living in a busy city. We are looking forward to following her creative journey throughout this residency and seeing the completed work later in the year!”

Our Artist in Residence Programme strives to cultivate an environment where artists can develop their experience as they wish; whether that may be through through conceptual development, research, or intervention and experimentation, we support artists to allow them to have the utmost freedom while in residence. The residency structure is therefore left open in order to cater to individuality and spontaneity. We work to provide a safe space where intellectual and creative pursuits, methods of artistic investigation, and aesthetic inquiry are accepted, nurtured, and celebrated.

As a remote residency located in a unique, stunning, and challenging environment, North Lands Creative encourages artists to draw inspiration from place and take advantage of the solitude (and presence), our surrounding environment provides. North Lands Creative allows all artists to enter into an immersive space so that the artistic process can develop and thrive. Beyond our studio walls, we aim to provide opportunities for international and artistic exchange. We also encourage and welcome community engagement; North Lands Creative has an intimate relationship to the community of Lybster, and places emphasis on collaboration of all kinds.

We encourage artists of all métiers, both emerging and professional, to join us at North Lands Creative with a sense of curiosity and drive to connect with this special place as part of a personal experience and artistic development.
