This is a voluntary scheme whereby emerging artists and designers are given access to ECA facilities and studio space, for which there would be no charge, and the opportunity to develop new skills and experiences through assisting staff with guiding students in developing their creative practice.

A small number of places are available in the following disciplines:

Fashion
Glass
Graphic Design
Illustration
Jewellery and Silversmithing
Product and Design Informatics
Textiles
Each residency will start in September and run to the end of August, with a maximum duration of 12 months (confirmed dates will be agreed with the discipline areas within one month of interview and offer).

Skills/experience required for the Artist in Residence role:

A graduate in the specific discipline or a closely related area
Good communication skills, including the ability to concisely explain/impart knowledge, skills and a new perspective to students
Enthusiasm and flexibility with regards to gaining experience within the subject area and ECA as a whole
It is desirable that a candidate has a developing creative design practice and would be able to articulate this experience to design students
The role provides an opportunity to gain some teaching experience. The University’s Institute for Academic Development has a wide range of short courses and drop in sessions that are accessible to all artists in residence, staff and students to support demonstrating, teaching and pastoral support activities.

Many areas of the University of Edinburgh operate 24hour access. Access to some facilities in the School of Design is, however, limited to typically 9.00am – 9.00pm Monday – Thursday, and 9.00am – 5.00pm Friday. Your programme will advise you of these hours.

To apply, please:

– complete the Application Form (see below), including the names of two referees (who may be contacted if successful after interview)
– submit this together with a current CV and a covering letter noting your proposed area of development/enquiry in your creative practice. Please also include a clear link to a website or Dropbox with approximately 6 titled pieces of current work
– complete and submit the Additional Personal Information and Equal Opportunities Monitoring forms (see below)
Please note: Due to the nature of this residency, paid employment within the University of Edinburgh is not permitted during the duration of the residency.
